Planning & Research
covering all the aspects of the process taking place from the start to the end.

Andrew's car, we used this in many shots, such as escorting Bajrush to the park when he begins his journey and also picking him and dropping him off. Also we used various filming techniques such as 'tacking' and 'panning' which worked well when finished.
Location Research:

Again this is another shot within the same location. This was part of our location and planning research as we had to identify why we felt this was an ideal location and what we would be able to achieve by using this shot. We practiced and planned Bajrush walking out of this door as seen in the final piece of our product.
Another shot of the location we used for when Bajrush is seen coming out and entering Andrew's car.
Here with have the location of Andrew's house, this was an ideal location in enhancing our representation of our character; being a middle class english teenager.

Directing

The locations: Gym

As Andrew works at a gym we thought this was an ideal opportunity in which we can use various sporting envairoments to relate to our film which others may not have access to. We had to be aware of the gym times and when we were able to film so we had to take these issues in to account.
This is where 'Bajrush' gets knocked out by our very own Adam in the 'boxing flashback'
In the lift; we faced a problem with having a mirror in the lift. So we covered with cardboard and there was no longer the reflection of our cameraman
Here, we also recorded our very humorous podcast, this was our planning taking place
When we first started filming, most of us didn't know how to use the camera's, so we took time into making sure each and every one of us knew how to use the camera.

Dream (2011) Official opening sequence

Tuesday 22 March 2011

FOUNDATION PORTFOLIO- RESEARCH

We decided to use and gather information such as opening sequences from these movies such as Snatch, Oceans 11 and Rock N Rolla in order to benefit us and encourage to give us as many techniques and ideas when producing our opening sequences.
At the current time we had decided that our Genre was going to be a gangster movie, which the main characters had each been hustled and hoped to get there revenge by hustling the hustler. The scene was going to begin by either being in a middle of a con which was going well but would make the audience and viewers confused with whats going on and why is it happening. The other scenario which was discussed and decided in our group was a poker game, this would have been much easier what we thought a challange would make this task much more interesting, becasue for the poker game each character would walk in with their briefcase of £10,000 and then a small story explaining how they got there and what they hope to achieve in this game, is it that they want to win the poker game and please the ungrateful girlfriend or is it that they are waiting for the host to go for a ciggerette and then stick a knife through the back, this story we felt would have been extremely successful becasue it would have brought alot of suspense to the audience and the viewers.
These selected films nfluenced us becasue these films had a speciality which was that each character was in a group. Such as Snatch the boxing manager is in a group with his assistant, and also the robbery man is in a group with two other members a getaway driver who weighs more then the car itself and the intelegant one who decided to rob a well armed bookies. After analysing these particular movies we felt that working in a group would make the film more exciting anf give each character a speciality, such as one of us being the Man with the plan, and another person being the brute, or being a ladies man or a pretty boy.
After alot of research into this Genre and gathering resources we felt that this may have already been done, or which may have been made similiar by our colleagues, one memeber in our team Bajrush had an idea which in fact so different from what we were going to do that we felt it may be a great risk, but then again with risk it can come out with the best consequence or the worst. So we took the risk for we felt Bajrush was greatly confident and believed in this idea, and as a group we supported the idea, even thought a few of us had a feeling it would go down as a disaster. Bajrush's idea was that a young man who has no ability whatsoever e.g he cannot play basketball, boxing and even sucks at gym, the character gives his story explaining his emotions of whats going on to him and expressess himself. After filming a few scenes  of this all of us felt convinced that this might become successful, the reasons becasue nothing like this has been been made before making it a innovative and fresh idea, we conducted a bit of market research and found that atleast 3/4 media groups were going to make a videa with action and violance in it, and its not like we watch real life violance and action in cinema's where it is in fact 10 times better anf not that of a guy falling onto a spring mattress (not very life like), so we felt our opening sequence would in fact be popular for being so different. Also the acting done by Bajrush the main character was excellant and life like, you can tell from his acting that he expressed his emotions and was fully comitted into the role of his character.
Our target Audience we decided were going to be 14-30+, the reason why we decided this was becasue anyone younger then the age of 14 would find this video boring becasue there is no humour, well there is a little but as much as a more younger person would enjoy, the reason why 30+ because the openeing sequence has no action or violance in it making it a more of a family film and also that of which a more older target audience would enjoy for they tend to enjoy a good storyline in a film and also want more verbal then violance for then it is easier to follow, example if someone gets punches the audience would be like why did they get punched what did it lead to and what did they gain from it, however with verbal they can follow along with whats going on and can understand it more effectively.. Our group thought could this film be successful with no action or violance, but we felt that this was indeed a challange and and i can say on behalf of the group that we had overcome that challange, which allows us in future to undergo difficult situations.
We chose many different locations and each member in the group produced atleast ten locations each, so the problem was not that we didnt have any locations but in fact that we had to many locations. The locations which had in mind to film at was: Coombe Sixth Form - this was to do filming of the main character in his school life, using this location we could have used the main hall for basketball and other such activities, also we have used the exterior of the Sixth form to do the walking scenes, that way we may have saved a lot of time which we could have covered doing the editing. Also another location which we actually used in our preliminary task was a block of flats in Blakes Lane near the A3 roundabout. In the preliminary task we used the location to do the filming of the stairs which we felt was quite impressing, so we thought why not add this to the main task of the opening sequence, as an alternative of the lift, but then we realized that lets try something new, why stick to the basics or do whatever come and goes easily, so we thoughts lets think outside the box, infact rip the box entirely and turn it into a circle, this was going to be our way of thinking from now on. So really we did not use the clip of the stairs but went to a member in our groups house and filmed a scene of a lift there, a problem of this location was that the duration of getting to and from there was indeed lengthy, so we needed to find an alternative. Luckily we realized even though at a late stage that there was a lift in School, which was perfect because it was in the same building as our media class, making the distance less then a minute away.

DREAM

The third location we chose was the park in New Malden, we decided to use this location to show how the character Bajrush is having a difficult time wherever he goes, gym, basketball and boxing, but when he goes to the park he feels relaxed away from all his troubles, the sun beaming on his forehead representing and showing peacefulness.

DREAM

We finally solved this problem by placing a piece of cardboard on the mirror so that there was no reflection, meaning that the viewers would not know that we used two different locations which was great for it meant we didnt have to place a great deal of time and effort into searching for a similiar locations. Once we placed the cardboard we did not have any support for it to staying on the wall, so to solve this problem aswell we had Adam to lean on the piece of cardboard and positioning himself making him look like a drunk or a man on drugs (was indeed funny). There was a great sigh of relief once this clip was completed, for whilst filming because we were in a school, we had young children walking or running past shouting things to one another, so we had to make sure there was someone blocking the doors on either side to make sure they dont interupt the filming for it would add sound which may be hard to edit.

DREAM

Problems we had with the second location was that, we filmed a scene of Bajrush walking into a lift which was in Adams block of flats, we thought this would be to our advantage the reason for this, is because adding a scene with a lift would increase our camera shots, showing viewers and ourselves that we have used a range of camera angles and shots, making our opening sequence look quite proffessional. However later on during our filming we realized that the journey was indeed long in getting to and from Adam's house, we realized this after completeing a scene in the lift, getting back to school to edit the clip, but then still missed a few angles for they were not matching with the clips before and the clips after. So we as a group were trying to think of an alternative location which included a lift. We found this in our School (Coombe Girls School) which was great, but... due to the fact that it was in a School in the lift there was a mirror and the opposition image was a row of bright blue lockers. You may ask how such a thing was a problem? Well it was a huge dilema, the reason because the scene that was supposed to be before the lift scene, was the scene of the character Bajrush walking out of his home (Adam's house)  then heading towards the lift, so then how can they be a row of lockers when he is in an estate, we thought of ways around it such as the row of lockers being in fact a locker for each person living there's post box, there was no way around it we showed the clip to our friends and colleagues but the clip purposely showed that they were indeed two different locations.

DREAM

The second location we decided to do filming was at Adam's home. the reason we chose this area and location was becasue we wanted the place to be realistic, most people would have used big houses, clubs and other fantasy locations, our location showed that the character Bajrush lived in a rough area which he had to leave and unfortunately return to every single day in his life. This would therefore show and express his feelings via the exterior environment. We thought this was indeed clever and rarely used.

DREAM

Our first filming of the opening sequence was at Andrews workplace the gym. At this particular location we managed to fit a lot in. for example the basketball scene of Bajrush losing incredibly, also the boxing scene where he was getting knocked out by a 10 year old (slight exaggeration). Also using Andrew's workplace we managed to fit in a minimum amount of humour, for it was when we were filming Bajrush about to do weights, and he thinking he is strong and powerful chooses a larger weight then intended, but then the humour kicks in when the character Andrew (played by Andrew himself) points him in the direction of the lightest weight possible, making the image of Bajrush to be weak and insignificant showing his true characteristics and personality, also after the character Andrew points him in the right direction of what weight to choose, Bajrush still decides to go for the larger size of weights, also portraying a stuborn side of the character Bajrush. the final filming we took at Andrew's workplace was of Bajrush walking into the main hall dancing as he walks in making him show that he is interested and appealed by dancing, allowing us the audience into understanding his passion and his feelings towards dancing.

the opening scene was quite difficult indeed the reason for this was because we all had so many ideas yet we only had three minutes of recording to do and had had atleast four hours of ideas, (seriously), Bajrush had the idea of having the opening scene of a young man failing at everything, but then Andrew, Ak and our director Adam decided that we should have the opening scene being a dream which the young man ( Bajrush) wakes up from a epiphony and realizes that he has to do something with his life. in this dream he himself realizes that he is rubbish at nearly everything he does but still attempts to try.

DREAM

Filming was going to be a bit tricky for most of us (not naming anyone) because we had not done it before so as we were filming we were also learning which made our opening sequence even better, the reason because we learnt a new skill and at the time putting that skill into practice. Adam was our director which our group felt was a good decision, this was because when Adam puts his mind to something we will work on it till the end, this helped the rest of us because he kept us motivated by making sure each and every one of us was doing what we were supposed to. He also included us in all major decisions, he did this not because he had to but because he felt it would be important to involve us all making us feel valued and boost our self esteem improving our performance. Andrew was one of our filmers/ actor, after each shot he filmed he re-shot it making sure there wasen't no mistake or error, the great thing about Andrew was that for him it was not about the quantity of the film or rushing it it was the quality and making sure each shot and scene was 100% perfect. Bajrush was our other filmer/ main actor. He had the same skill and performance effort as Andrew but stood out from the crowd due to his credible acting which was why we made him the main character. After watching the the clips we could identify the emotion and dedication Bajrush put into the acting, which we as a whole group greatly appreciated. AK was the last of our filmers/ actor, he too showed great dedication into filming and into the acting, he made sure everyone was comfortable and helping them act giving them support.

DREAM

We started the task by selecting each memeber in the group with what position they were gonna be e.g Bajrush was going to be the main character whose story was that he had no special skill or ability whatsoever, such as not being able to play football, basketball, boxing and etc. So this was the role of one of our colleages, Bajrush. to prevent from spoiling the film we cannot explain any further. the second member in our group Andrew Dixon, we and he himself decided that he was going to have the expected role of being the main friend of the character played by Bajrush, and helped him out a lot by listening to his problems and offering him lifts to places e.g gym, to and back home. We chose this position for Andrew because he carried the characteristics such as being a mans man, always helping out when needed without the need of being approached. The third member in our opening sequence was Adam, it was tricky to know where to place Adam because he had a variety of key skills and only too little positions, so if we decided to put him somewhere we had to be 100% sure it was the right position, to make it fair we took a vote and finally concluded that Adam was going to play the part of being the conman, this was a great risk which could have led to a few negative consequences, but after rehearsing everything fell into place. Last of all Ak who played the position of being the "the man with the plan" always got an idea of what to do and having connections with nearly everyone.

Foundation Portfolio

we started the task by selecting what genre works best with todays public society. Firstly we decided our genre to be of a comedy gangster, based in London casino with the opening scene going to be a scam on a poker game. We then later discussed that it may be too common in terms of the team mates all making their opening sequences based around crime or of a familiar genre. we then concluded that our opening sequence was going to be based upon a young man living in the inner city suburbs of London having know real quality for him break away from this environment. he does however portray one specialized skill and talent in what being dancing. this then changed our genre from being 'comedy gangster' based in a London casino to a more present/modern and young genre for those target audiences who enjoy a comedy which is based around excitement and laughter moments which keeps the audience anticipated to whats next.

we started the task "Feed the Fish" by choosing an appropriate locations to match the theme which is comedy and gangster.
firstly we found a rugged estate near the A3 roundabout, there was no difficulty entering and filming on the premises due to the fact there was no door (no joke).
the second location we chose was in the school (Coombe Sixth Form) in an empty classroom which we aranged the classrooms to look like  an office we also enhanced the theme by wearing suits
